How to capture your FPS in 5 minutes
You need Windows, your sim, and the free, open-source CapFrameX. Triple screens first, but this works the same for single, ultrawide and VR (for VR see the note at the end).
1. Install CapFrameX (about 2 minutes)
- Install the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime (x64). CapFrameX 1.9.1 needs it, even if you already have another .NET version.
- Download the latest release from GitHub. Installer: extract the ZIP and run
CapFrameXBootstrapper.exe. Portable: extract and runCapFrameX.exe. - Open the Capture page. Note the capture hotkey and set the capture time to 60 seconds (0 means unlimited).
Source: CapFrameX README (MIT licence).
2. Set up a repeatable run (iRacing replay method)
- Race a full-grid AI or hosted session on the track you want to test, then save the replay. A replay shows the same cars in the same places every time, so runs are comparable.
- Open the replay, jump to the race start (the heaviest moment: full grid in view), and use the in-car (cockpit) camera.
- Write down: sim version, track, car, number of cars, time of day and weather, graphics preset, frame cap.
- Triples: note your combined resolution (e.g. 7680 x 1440), whether you use iRacing's own triple rendering ("Render scene using 3 projections") or NVIDIA Surround / AMD Eyefinity, and whether NVIDIA SMP is on. iRacing's triple-screen guide.
- ACC and LMU: same idea. Save a replay of an AI race, or start an AI race from the same grid slot each time.
Method: pixelsonly.racing, OverTake.gg.
3. Capture (about 1 minute)
- Close overlays and apps you do not need. With the sim running, CapFrameX should show the sim's process; if several processes are listed, close the others so the hotkey captures the sim.
- Play the replay from the start and press the capture hotkey. Let it run the full 60 seconds.
- Do it three times and keep the middle result. Captures are saved to
Documents\CapFrameX\Capturesas.jsonfiles. - Take a screenshot of your sim's graphics settings page.
4. Submit (about 1 minute)
Go to Submit a result, choose Triple screens, fill in the details and attach the .json capture and the screenshot. The form reads your file in your browser first and shows your average FPS and 1% lows. Our server recalculates them, and a person checks your settings screenshot before anything is published.
VR and PresentMon
VR: CapFrameX captures the sim's desktop frames, which may not match what the headset shows. For headset timing use XRFrameTools (OpenXR) and export to CSV. Prefer Intel's tool? PresentMon CSV files are accepted too.
